Welcome to the Individual Participation Page - where you can learn about how you can be part of GreenStep Schools, no matter who you are.
Strong green teams have many different roles represented. Shown: Some members of the Roseville Area Schools Green Team, 2025.
Whatever your interests or role, you can be involved in Minnesota GreenStep Schools.
Individual participation takes many forms. You can explore the ideas below and be sure to look at Ways to Get Involved to get connected!
Green Team Member: A Green Team Member is an individual who is participating in planning or implementing any of the best practice actions at a particular school or school district. They might be broadly interested in greening their school or have a particular interest area. For example, they might be a food service planner, or a teacher or a student. And they might be linked to one or more actions that the school is working on. This could also be a consultant or a community volunteer that is part of the team working on a particular action step.
GreenStep Student or GreenStep Club Member: Students are some of the best advocates and change-makers in GreenStep Schools. Any student that is helping their school go green, is making a difference. GreenStep clubs takes this a step further. Any club that works on GreenStep areas can become a GreenStep Club. Or you can form a new GreenStep club. Dcoumenting your activities can be a way for students to develop leadership and be recognized for their participation in school greening as well as build a portfolio of activities related to their green school extra-curricular work. GreenStep Clubs get their own page on the website to encourage student green school networking across the state. Editorial control and privacy measures for GreenStep Club accounts are managed according to policies at the school or district level.
GreenStep Friend: This role is for those who would like to show support and keep informed with less involvement in the direct planning and implementation of action steps. These individuals receive updates about the program and school or schools they are interested in through social media, newsletter subscription, or filling out the interest form depending on the ways to get involved that they are interested in.
While school districts and individual schools are the focus of the program, all can participate in some way. We all have a stake in the education and health and well-being of our youth, as well as the environmental and economic performance of our schools. Some of these individual roles might be connected to a particular school or school district, and other roles might be related to promoting or supporting green schools more broadly.
